How do I take the correct measurements?

Sewing clothes can be a rewarding and creative activity. But it can be frustrating when the finished garment doesn't fit right. One of the most important steps to ensure your sewn garment fits perfectly is choosing the right size pattern. Here are some tips on how to find the right size:

Measuring correctly

Before choosing a sewing pattern, it's important to take your body measurements accurately. Use a flexible measuring tape to measure your bust, waist, hips, and other relevant areas. Then compare your measurements with the pattern's size chart to determine the correct size. You can easily download the size charts from our website as a PDF. That way, you'll always have them handy if needed.

Take measurements

To determine your correct pattern size, accurate and professional measuring is essential. Only your basic body measurements are needed to determine your correct pattern size. When taking measurements, wear no shoes and ideally only underwear. Have someone help you to accurately record the necessary body measurements. Make sure the measuring tape is not too tight around your body.

1 Chest circumference - measure across the tops of the breasts, under the arms and across the back over the shoulder blades.

2 Chest – measure around the body over the fullest part of the chest

3. Waist measurement – measure snugly around the waist. The measuring tape should not be too tight.

4 Hip width – place the measuring tape over your hip bones and measure your hip circumference.

5 Back length – measure from the first cervical vertebra across the middle of the back to the lower edge of the waistband.

6. Height – the best way to measure your height is by standing upright and leaning against a wall.

For men and boys:

Neck width – around the neck (not too high around the neck) Or take a shirt – cut according to the clothing size.

Chest: Measure around the body across the fullest part of the chest. Measured at the natural waistline – over a shirt.

Hip: Measure while sitting or at the widest point of the hip.

Sleeve length: With the arm slightly bent, from the shoulder over the elbow to the wrist.

Height – body size – without shoes (preferably leaning against a wall)

For boys & girls, toddlers and children:

Take the same measurements as described above, but omit the bust measurement.

Consider your body shape

Every body is unique, and sewing patterns are usually tailored to a specific body shape. For example, if you have an hourglass figure, you may need a different size for the upper body than for the lower body. Make sure the pattern fits your individual body shape.

Make a prototype

It's advisable to make a test garment from an inexpensive fabric before sewing your final version. This way, you can make adjustments if the pattern doesn't fit perfectly. Adapt the test garment to your needs before you begin sewing the final piece.

Note the seam allowance.

BURDA sewing patterns do not include seam allowance, the extra fabric needed to sew the seams. Make sure you add seam allowance when cutting your fabric to ensure the garment fits correctly.

By following these tips and carefully selecting the correct size for your sewing patterns, you can ensure that your finished garment fits perfectly and that you can be proud of your handiwork. And remember: the dress you sewed is absolutely unique – and you made it yourself!
