Laura Ashley was a British designer and entrepreneur, known for her romantically nostalgic fabric patterns, dresses, and home textiles. Her style, like almost no other, shaped the country chic and Victorian-inspired aesthetic of the 20th century.

Beginnings

In the early 1950s, she began hand-printing fabrics with historical designs — initially for scarves and kitchen textiles. What was special: It didn't look like a trend, but rather a loving return to timeless artisanal aesthetics.

• 1953 founded with Bernard Ashley (Ashley Mountney Ltd., later "Laura Ashley Ltd.")
• The first prints were created in her own kitchen

Growth

From the 1960s onwards, "Laura Ashley" became synonymous with romantic country house style:

First own store: Machynlleth, Wales (1961). After that, things moved quickly: London, Paris, New York, and Tokyo followed.

Tragic Death & Legacy

Laura Ashley died in 1985 from injuries sustained in a fall down stairs. After her death, the company continued — with varying success. But what she created remained: a style that never really "wears out."
